mathom
Это слово следует сохранить без изменений – оно не из всеобщего, его употребляют только хоббиты (ср. Smials и см. приложение F). В прологе (раздел 1) его значение определяется как "что-либо у хоббитов, чему нет применения в настоящее время, но что жалко выкинуть". Это слово соответствует древнеанглийскому "máðm" – "ценность, сокровище".
